Periodic oceanic euxinia and terrestrial fluxes linked to astronomical forcing during the Late Devonian Frasnian–Famennian mass extinction

چکیده
Oceanic anoxia is considered as the immediate cause of Frasnian–Famennian mass extinction, yet frequency and associated environmental modulators remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that astronomical forcing paced oceanic anoxic episodes by mediating land-ocean interactions during Upper Kellwasser (UKW) Event, using an ultra-high-resolution (one centimeter spacing), multi-proxy geochemical profile a UKW interval from Devonian Chattanooga Shale Tennessee, USA. Organic inorganic indices for anoxia/euxinia, marine primary productivity, terrestrial plant/soil inputs, clastic sediment inputs show synchronous fluctuations were Earth's orbital precession. This study provides first mechanistic evidence linking periodicity Late euxinia to identifies terrestrial-to-marine organic fluxes driver this linkage. These results suggest modulated expression stressors led extinction.

Speciation collapse and invasive species dynamics during the Late Devonian “ Mass Extinction ”
The Late Devonian (Frasnian-Famennian) interval includes one of the most dramatic intervals of biotic turnover in the Phanerozoic. Statistical evaluation of diversity change reveals that the primary cause of biodiversity decline was reduced speciation during the crisis interval, not elevated extinction rates. Although various hypotheses have been proposed to explain extinction increase during t...
متن کاملOceanic forcing of the late 20th century Sahel drought
[1] The Sahel region of Africa underwent a pronounced interdecadal drying trend in the latter half of the 20th century. In order to investigate this drying trend, several ensembles of numerical experiments are conducted using a recently developed atmospheric general circulation model (AM2, developed at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory). When the model is forced with the time series ...
متن کاملBiogeographic and bathymetric determinants of brachiopod extinction and survival during the Late Ordovician mass extinction.
The Late Ordovician mass extinction (LOME) coincided with dramatic climate changes, but there are numerous ways in which these changes could have driven marine extinctions. We use a palaeobiogeographic database of rhynchonelliform brachiopods to examine the selectivity of Late Ordovician-Early Silurian genus extinctions and evaluate which extinction drivers are best supported by the data. The f...

Temnospondyls are the most species-rich group of early amphibians, but specieslevel phylogenetic analyses of this large clade have so far only incompletely sampled the group. This study represents the largest and most comprehensive species-level phylogenetic study of Temnospondyli, sampling 99 taxa for 297 morphological characters from all seven continents through nearly 170 million years of th...
